The tradition started in 1941 to break a losing streak against rival the Texas A&M Aggies. According to legend, in 1941 students consulted fortune teller Madam Augusta Hipple who instructed them to burn red candles the week before the game as a way of "hexing" the Aggies. UT's Hex Rally and A&M's Bonfire traditions are both ending this year as Texas A&M joins the SEC after the end of the season. Picture taken November 21, 2011. "

The college football weekend was filled with some exciting games and new developments and when all the dust settled on Sunday, Alabama remained number one in the AP Top 25 with a week off, while the top five rounded out with Oregon, Clemson, Ohio State and Stanford, while Texas and USC fell out after bad losses.

Both Texas and USC lost to "lesser" opponents and now after winning each of their first games, coaches Lane Kiffin and Mack Brown could be on the hot seat. Clemson was able to move up one spot, while the Buckeyes fell back one and Stanford stayed in the same position at number five. Texas is now out of the rankings after losing 40-21 against BYU and the team was embarrassed on defense in the game, giving up over 500 yards rushing, a record for the school.

Brown could be in some hot water after the loss and clearly he feels it, as he already changed up defensive coordinators heading into next week. Texas has had a few down seasons and expectations were high in 2013 with David Ash, but things may already be derailed after the team fell to 1-1 after just its second game. USC is also looking at some tough decisions, as the team was stunned 10-7 by Washington State and things on offense did not work at any point over the four quarters.

The Trojans lost Matt Barkley to the NFL, but with Marqise Lee still in the fold the unit was expected to be productive, but instead they are left asking questions and wondering what went wrong as they are now out of the top 25. Some of the other big losses this week include Notre Dame falling to Michigan, while South Carolina lost to Georgia in a tough SEC matchup. The Miami Hurricanes also upset the Florida Gators and they now are into the top 25 after being absent since back in 2010.

Both Brown and Kiffin likely will make it through the season, but after coming in with high expectations again, the two schools may decide to move in a different direction. Kiffin came into last season with the number one ranked team and USC totally disappointed, going 7-6 and now the pressure will be on even more with this latest loss.
