MLB Network reports that Michael Young of the Philadelphia Phillies would waive his no-trade clause to play for the Boston Red Sox. A move would be the Red Sox's second move in less than 24 hours. No deal has been worked out, but the first step has been taken as it would have taken Young's approval to complete any deal.
The rumors of the Red Sox's interest in Young have been roaming around for a few weeks now. Following the Red Sox's trade for Jake Peavy that sent Jose Iglesias to the Detroit Tigers in a three-way deal involving seven players, Boston lost a versatile infielder who could have taken over the hot corner on a regular day basis. Brandon Snyder and Brock Holt are currently the third basemen in the Red Sox organization. Who?! That's exactly the point.
Young isn't having his best of seasons, but the 36-year-old could provide a spark in any offense. He's hitting .279 with eight home runs and 35 RBI. Young possesses a decent on-base percentage, reaching base close to 35 percent of the time. In retrospect, Holt and Snyder combined are hitting a combined .259 with two home runs and 15 RBI. To say Young is an upgrade would be an understatement.
Young's presence in baseball's best offense would only give the Red Sox a boost. He's a veteran third baseman with a proven track record, known to be loyal to his team. Young made a living with the Texas Rangers and he was known for accommodating big signings. He moved from shortstop to third base after the Alex Rodriguez acquisition. He then took charge at first base after the Rangers acquired Adrian Beltre.
A move to the American League can also boast well for the veteran. He knows his opponents and could be a great addition to a locker room full of veterans. The Red Sox are currently in second place and they are atop of the A.L. Wild Card race.
