The Oakland Raiders have officially wrapped up their rookie class. The team announced that they have reached a contract agreement with cornerback D.J. Hayden. The rookie was the team's first-round draft pick, going No. 12 overall. Hayden is out of the University of Houston and was widely regarded as the top cornerback available this year.
Hayden's health has been in question. The cornerback suffered a serious blood vessel injury and underwent abdominal surgery back in May. Head coach Dennis Allen has indicated that Hayden is completely healthy and ready to start camp. He participated in a few offseason practices after being released from the hospital. Allen recognizes that team must be careful with Hayden.
"Hey, listen, it's a little bit of uncharted waters, but we still feel comfortable that he'll be back and ready to go in camp. We feel confident he'll be back and be ready to go," Allen said.
Hayden will be competing for a starting role on the Raiders' defense. The Oakland secondary has gone through plenty of changes after signing Charles Woodson at safety and veteran cornerbacks Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins. Hayden stands a great chance at earning a starting spot even though the roster is crowded at the position. The coaching staff has been impressed with Hayden's ball skills and fluidity on the field.
Hayden could be the next among the Raiders' long history of outstanding cornerbacks. Woodson is of course one of the top names on that list. The veteran is returning to Oakland on a one-year contract deal and is expected to serve as a mentor to the young player.
General manager Reggie McKenzie believes Hayden could be one of those cornerstone athletes the franchise can build around. The rookie is in a perfect situation, able to learn from veterans and develop slowly. However, the veterans will be his main competition for a starting spot. Hayden has the elite speed to give him the inside tract. His 4.4 40-yard dash will certainly elevate the secondary. Porter is coming off of a season ending injury after suffering a seizure last season in Denver. His skill set is similar to that of Hayden's. Jenkins and last year's nickel back, Joselio Hanson will all played into the rotation.
