Free-agent power forward Kenyon Martin has reached an agreement to re-sign to the New York Knicks for a one-year deal worth the veteran's minimum of $1.4 million.

Martin, 35, made a strong impression on the Knicks' front office and coaching staff in order to earn his return to the Knicks.

He joined the Knicks in late February and played 18 regular-season games averaging 7.2 points and 5.3 rebounds. He was a big boon to their interior as the Knicks suffered from massive injury woes to their big men. But the power forward wasn't a big help vs. the sturdy Pacers and the Knicks hemmed and hawed before signing him immediately out of training camp.

Martin played in 12 playoff games for the Knicks and averaged nearly six points in 21 minutes.

In his 13 NBA seasons playing for the Brooklyn Nets, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers and Knicks, Martin has career averages of 12.8 points and 5.3 rebounds. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 NBA draft out of the University of Cincinnati.

With Martin slated to return to the roster, the Knicks now have three roster spots that remain to be filled. They would like to get a third point guard and perhaps another big man for insurance after the injuries they sustained up front last season. But general manager Glen Grunwald said he may want to keep a spot or two open to see if any camp invitee impresses enough to make the team.
