Robinson Cano Hit By Matt Harvey in 1st Inning, Leaves Game with Knee Injury

Jul 16, 2013 08:56 PM EDT

Robinson Cano exited the 2013 All-Star Game after getting plunked by a Matt Harvey fastball on his right knee. Cano took first base, but as Miguel Cabrera concluded his at bat and Chris Davis went to the batter's box, Cano and the trainers exited the field.

"I feel terrible. My apologies definitely go out to him," said Harvey in an interview with FOX's Erin Andrews.  Harvey might have been pretty nervous as the 24-year-old was in the first inning of his first ever All-Star Game start.

Mike Trout got the game started with a first-pitch double down the right-field line as Joe Votto was playing well off the line. Harvey started Cano off with a 97 MPH fastball that ran up and away, which might have been a sign that the Met was overthrowing.

The American League couldn't get anything done though they had some of baseball's best sluggers up at the plate. Cabrera struck out on a 2-2 slider, Chris Davis popped up to centerfield and Jose Bautista also struck out on a 2-2 slider.

Cano was removed from the game and was substituted by Boston Red Sox second baseman, Dustin Pedroia.

The tweets immediately began coming as fans categorized this first inning as the best inning in the Mets' season:

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman also let his thoughts be heard through Twitter. He brought it back and thought of the incident as revenge for something that happened before Harvey was even a teenager.

Harvey completed the game with 2 IP, 1 hit, 1 HBP, 0 ER, 0 BB and 3 K's.

9:00 p.m. ET- UPDATE- The injury Cano sustained was on his quadriceps and not his knee.

9:11 p.m. ET- UPDATE- Cano was in the dugout with Ken Rosenthal. Said the quad felt tight, but he'll be ready to go for the Yankees' game on Friday. Cano said he was disappointed after being removed from the game since he wanted to please the New York fans.
