Oakland Raiders Rumors: Matt Flynn Has Edge In Quarterback Race Over Tyler Wilson, Reggie McKenzie and Dennis Allen Like New Defense With Charles Woodson and Nick Roach

The Oakland Raiders have been one of the most active teams during the NFL offseason this year and after making a number of free agent signings and solid draft picks, the team is poised to improve in 2013 after going just 4-12 and missing the playoffs last year.

The team has a whole new look on offense after trading for Matt Flynn from the Seattle Seahawks and dealing last season's starter Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals and after drafting Tyler Wilson from Arkansas in the fourth round, many feel that he can challenge for the starting or backup position with Terrelle Pryor. Flynn has already lost his starting job once to a player named Wilson after getting beaten out in training camp after signing a three-year deal with the Seahawks before last season and now many feel that Wilson could do it again, although that is unlikely as the Raiders gave up some picks to get Flynn and will give him the edge to start.

Head coach Dennis Allen said that the team is taking a slow approach to the quarterback battle and that when the team picks things up in camp over the summer he will have a better idea of how to handle Wilson and Flynn. Allen said that he isn't planning to make a decision about the quarterback battle until later in the summer when the team starts having full practices and while many writers in the media in the Bay Area have been calling for a quarterback competition, Allen will likely give Flynn every chance he can to win the job.

Flynn will be 28-years-old when the season starts and although he hasn't had much experience starting, he performed well when given the chance, including when he threw for six touchdowns and nearly 500 yards in a start for Aaron Rodgers with the Packers. The team brought Flynn in after Carson Palmer turned down a contract restructuring and it worked out well for the Raiders, as it was another big contract they were able to get off the books. Terrelle Pryor will also be in on the conversation, but Allen said that he is not yet ready to start, but that could change depending on how training camp goes.

General manager Reggie McKenzie and Allen were impressed with Wilson at the beginning of OTA workouts, which is one reason why the stories about Flynn were written, but that doesn't mean he will be able to win the starting job come training camp. In fact, the man who Wilson is putting the most pressure on is Pryor, as he will have the inside track to the backup position for Flynn after being drafted in the fourth round and if he keeps playing well, Pryor will have to prove himself worthy of that spot. The team is likely to start Flynn since they traded for him and if he plays poorly they could slide Wilson in to start.
