With the NBA free agency period already underway, the Dallas Mavericks have theoretically found themselves in prime position to offer Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard a max four-year $88 million contract to leave L.A.

"The time is here to make some noise," said Mavericks' forward Dirk Nowitzki, who turned 35 last month. "We only have five guys or six guys under contract, so we got a lot of work to do."

Nowitzki has already reached out to the former three-time Defensive Player of the Year.

"He's doing well," Nowitzki said. "I guess he's just weighing all his options.

Howard is the most sought out player during this free agency period and has been rumored to have narrowed his choices down to the Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors, Mavericks and Lakers.

Things would be much smoother for the Mavericks if they can secure Howard, who is still widely considered the most dominating center in the game.

"We're going to LA and set a meeting date with a couple of different players," Cuban said. "And I'm not going to get into details of who, when, where and how, because then you guys would show up and that would ruin the day."

However, it would appear that Howard's not the only free agent to hit the Mavericks radar as the team has already been in contact with point guard Monta Ellis during the first day of free agency.

Ellis, 27, signed a six-year, $66 million contact with the Golden State Warriors in 2008 and was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks last season where he averaged 19.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and six assists.

Ellis opted out of the final year his six-year deal, thus making one of the league's top shooting guards a free agent.
