The Boston Celtics have completed the first blockbuster trade of the 2013 offseason in the NBA. After the team dealt coach Doc Rivers to the Los Angeles Clippers over the weekend, Boston must decide what the next step is. With Rivers now officially out, the next decision will likely revolve around the core group of players including Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. It was rumored that Garnett was involved with the Rivers trade, but that did not get approved. Now, Pierce is the next on the chopping block.
The Celtics have to decide whether or not to pay Pierce his $15 million salary this upcoming season or buy-out the deal for $5 million. The Cleveland Cavaliers have reportedly decided to step in an offer the Celtics some assistance. According to The News-Herald, Cleveland has offered their two second-round draft picks in exchange for Pierce. They have reportedly reached out to Boston asking what the availability is of Pierce and returned with that offer. If dealt, Pierce's $15.3 million contract becomes guaranteed.
Take every rumor with a grain of salt, but multiple sources report that Cleveland is very serious about putting this trade together. It is a very lowball offer and there is little chance that Boston decides that this is all Pierce is worth, but they will entertain multiple offers for the veteran. Second-round draft picks is not much, but it is better to receive compensation than being forced to pay $5 million and get nothing in return.
Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is desperate to get a veteran on the team in order to make a serious run at the playoffs in 2013. Currently with a roster filled with youth and potential, he has been toying with the idea of adding a veteran instead of making big moves in the draft. Gilbert has been shopping around the No. 1 overall draft pick in return for a proven player that will complement the young talent already in place in Cleveland. He is not sure adding a few more rookies to the team will help put together a playoff run.
Pierce would be a nice compliment to rising star Kyrie Irving. After being with the Celtics for 15 years, it is hard to see him playing for another team, but the Cavaliers work on paper. If Boston is in fact going to send Pierce packing, they will make sure to get more than two second-round picks in return.
