Liverpool Transfer News: Iago Aspas Insists He is Not a Replacement for Luis Suarez

As the saga surrounding the exit of Luis Suarez continued, Liverpool's new summer signing Iago Aspas insisted he has not been brought to Anfield as a replacement for the Uruguay international.

Liverpool announced a move had been agreed with Celta Vigo for Aspas, in a deal thought to be worth around £7.7 million ($12 million).

Some reports have suggested the 25-year-old has been signed as a direct replacement to Suarez, who has expressed his unhappiness in the English Premier League, but Aspas disagrees.

"Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and I am going there to take an important step in my career, not to be a replacement for anyone," he is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

"I think it is time for me to take the next step in my career and Liverpool can help me do that. I have confidence in my ability to move forward and to grow as a player."

Aspas said the fact that a club with the stature of Liverpool showed an interest in him, proves he is ready to take the next step in his career.

"I described the move as emotional for me because it is such a big club and it means I've reached another level.

"But I am calm because I feel I am ready. I want to show that I am capable of playing at the level of this huge club.

"I am excited to be going to England. I want to play in the Premier League. And I hope I will be helped to settle there by all the Spanish speakers at the club, including Luis Suarez."

Suarez is reportedly being chased by Real Madrid, who incidentally are also interested in his Uruguay teammate Edinson Cavani.

While Liverpool have insisted Suarez is not for sale, it remains to be seen if a club outside the Premier League shows enough interest to put in a huge bid which the Reds will find hard to refuse.
