Arsenal Transfer News: Victor Wanyama Must Be Bought By Arsene Wenger in the Summer, According to Perry Groves

Arsenal legend Perry Groves has urged his former side to sign Victor Wanyama from Celtic in the summer.

Wanyama is one among several names linked with Arsenal as Arsene Wenger looks to bring in a ball-winning defensive midfielder to the Emirates in the summer transfer window.

Along with Wanyama, Maxime Gonalons, Lars Bender, Sven Bender and Etienne Capoue have also been linked with Gonalons seemingly looking like the most likely candidate to join Arsenal.

However, Wanyama, who is also interesting Inter Milan, Manchester United, Southampton and Tottenham, was thought to be of interest to Arsenal last summer as well, with Celtic reportedly turning down a bid from the English Premier League side.

Wanyama went on to have another excellent season with the Scottish champions, particularly impressing in the Champions League, and Groves believes the Kenyan international is exactly the kind of player that Arsenal need.

"I really like Wanyama -- he is destined for big things," Groves said. "He may be young but he plays for a massive club, has lots of experience for a young player, and he fits the Wenger model -- he is hungry, strong and technically very good.

"He would offer real protection for the back four, and a real thrust and drive going forward.

"We need big players who can step up to the plate and make an impact against the bigger teams, because that is what let us down last year - we had a woeful record against the other teams in the top four.

"We need strong mentalities, players who can impose themselves. I would like to see experienced lads who can come straight into the starting side, not players who take time to gel."

Wanyama has refused to sign a new contract with Celtic, but still has two years remaining on his current deal with the Scottish giants expected to demand somewhere around £10 million ($15 million) for the 21-year-old's services.

Gonalons is rated at the £15 million mark ($22.5 million), while Capoue is expected to be considerably less expensive.

Among the Bender brothers, Sven is unlikely to leave Borussia Dortmund with Bayer Leverkusen set to consider selling Lars only if a big bid is received.
