The Miami Dolphins took one of the biggest gambles and made one of the biggest splashes in the NFL draft after trading up to get linebacker Dion Jordan with the third pick out of Oregon and now that the summer is coming, the team is hoping to sign him to a contract at an affordable price after splurging in free agency.
The Dolphins went big in this offseason, signing wideout Mike Wallace and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe to large contracts, and now the team will take a hard line on their number three pick after doing the same with quarterback Ryan Tannenhill last year. According to Pro Football Talk, the Dolphins did not want to drop offset language in the deal for the quarterback despite the fact that next pick in Luke Kuechly got a fully guaranteed deal and now they want to do the same for Jordan.
Miami traded up with the Oakland Raiders to get Jordan after moving up from number 12 and since they moved up, Jordan has more leverage to keep out the language to get his deal guaranteed. Wallace's contract has language to offset his guaranteed money and the Dolphins will likely stay in on their position with Jordan, especially since he is coming off an injury. The big point will be whether Jordan wants to get into camp on time and that could get him to sign.
Last season the Dolphins were ranked 27th in passing yards allowed per game and 13th in rushing yards allowed per game and went 7-9 in the AFC East with a 2-4 division record. The team is expecting to improve under second year head coach Joe Philbin and the addition of Jordan will greatly help the defense and the pass rush.
