NFL Rumors: Randy Moss Retirement Likely as Wide Receiver Uncertain of Future After San Francisco 49ers Not Re-Signing Veteran

Randy Moss had once said he was looking to return to the NFL for one more season. He wanted one more shot at a Super Bowl title before riding off into the Hall of Fame sunset. However, it appears the wide receiver might be having a change of heart. While there has been some slight interest in Moss, nothing has really come to fruition and since the draft the market has gone relatively cold for specialty positions. Now, Moss is considering calling it career instead of attempting a return to the league.

Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com reports that Moss still remains uncertain about his future in football. After coming close to a Super Bowl win with the San Francisco 49ers, he wanted one more season whether the 49ers opted to re-sign him or not. San Francisco decided to pass on him and no one else is calling his number. Last season with the 49ers, Moss was relatively ineffective. He played in a16 games, but only had 28 catches for 434 yards and three touchdowns.

Many teams figure the veteran has lost his top gear of speed he was once known for. Once one of the most dangerous wide outs in the game, Moss has slowed down in recent years and forced to play a limited role with teams.

As OTAs begin and teams assess whether taking on a veteran wide receiver is worth it, Moss will likely wait out his decision a few more weeks. This will be his best opportunity to sign on with a team in time for training camps to begin. Moss's decision of retirement might come a lot easier if teams show zero interest.

If 2012 was in fact his last season in the NFL, his impressive resume will certainly land him in the NFL. Moss is a seven-time Pro Bowler and was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 1998. He holds an NFL record for most touchdown receptions in one season with 23 and most touchdown receptions by a rookie with 17.

At 36, a team could sign Moss to the minimum like the 49ers did. However, it seems more likely that retirement is becoming the likely option for Moss.
