The New York Jets were a complete mess last season after the team tried to bring in quarterback Tim Tebow to be a dynamic option in the offense and while they hurt Mark Sanchez in the process, he is still on the team, but for how long could be up for a debate.

According to SI.com, Peter King wrote in his Monday column that if Geno Smith proves himself over the summer and wins the starting job, Mark Sanchez will likely be cut. King writes that the team could also trade him for a low round draft pick, but either way, he feels that the Jets are going to head down one of those two roads as the summer wears on after Sanchez's play over the past two seasons. The team is going to give Smith a chance to start and based on how the Jets do things, they will get rid of Sanchez in the most dramatic way they can think of.

The Jets already have a glut of quarterbacks with Smith, Sanchez and David Garrard and now that Tim Tebow is gone at least so are many of the distractions that plagued things last year. The Jets had hoped Tebow would add a new element to the offense, but instead it just made things worse and eventually the team gave Tebow a pink slip and sent him packing and now all he has are arena league offers and indoor football.

Smith was a lock to the Jets once he slipped to round two and despite the fact that he has been criticized by some scouts, the Jets of course are talking him up like he is the second coming of Peyton Manning and saying the same things to fans they said when they got Sanchez...and when they got Tebow...and when they got Brett Favre. The organization is run like a minor league franchise and Smith could end up being a star, but based on his attitude leading up to getting selected, that is no sure thing.

Smith has said all the right things to the media to start off and he also said that Sanchez was a "pretty good quarterback," knowing they will have to compete down the line. Smith wants to start and he put up great stats at West Virginia last year, but now that he is in the NFL everything will be different for him.

King wrote: "I think if Geno Smith wins the Jet starting job to start the season, I wouldn't be remotely surprised if the Jets traded Mark Sanchez for a low-round draft pick or cut him before Week 1."
