Manchester United are set to lose out on the signing of Robert Lewandowski, after the in-demand forward reportedly made his intentions clear on joining Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window.
Lewandowski has been in stellar form this season, with his four-goal display against Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals particularly catching the eye of clubs around Europe.
The Borussia Dortmund striker has been watched by United for quite a while now, with Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly extremely keen on bringing the 24-year-old to Old Trafford.
Despite Ferguson's retirement, United are reportedly still prepared to make a bid for Lewandowski, but it might be in vain, with Bayern closing in on the signing.
Lewandowski has reportedly told Dortmund of his preference to join Bayern Munich in the summer, according to the Daily Mail. Several reports have suggested the striker has already agreed personal terms with the German champions, and now it only looks like a matter of time before a move is confirmed.
Dortmund were adamant about not selling another of their players to Bundesliga rivals Bayern, the team they face in the Champions League final at Wembley in a couple of weeks' time, after they poached Mario Gotze by triggering his release clause.
However, with Lewandowski insistent about joining the German giants, Dortmund have consigned themselves to the sale, rather than risk losing him on a free at the end of next season, when his contract runs out.
Dortmund will demand €25 million (£21 million, $32 million) for Lewandowski, with Bayern reportedly prepared to match the asking price.
Even though United have a pretty good forward line at the moment, spearheaded by Robin Van Persie, the English Premier League champions are bracing themselves for the possible exit of Wayne Rooney, who reportedly told Ferguson of his intention to leave Old Trafford in the summer.
Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint Germain have shown an interest and if indeed Rooney does leave, then United will definitely need a quality forward.
New manager David Moyes will have his hands full in trying to convince Rooney to stay, but will also be keeping an eye out for possible reinforcements if the 27-year-old decides to call time on his United career.
