The NASCAR Talladega 2013 race was a wild one on Sunday that saw a number of crashes, pack racing as well as a 16-car pileup and after getting caught up in the action, driver Ryan Newman was very pointed in his comments after the race, spurring a review by officials.
According to ESPN.com, Newman was part of the large crash on lap 183 on Sunday that saw the Sprint Cup race at Talladega Superspeedway finish with drama, as Kurt Busch's car was tapped and ended up flipping into the air and onto his car while he was racing towards the finish. Newman had a chance to finish in the top 10 or possibly in the top spot when it happened and the race was going late due to the rain delay from earlier.
Newman was visibly frustrated afterwards and said to reporters that he was okay after the crash, but he went at NASCAR, calling them "they", while saying that there were safer cars, helmets and walls, but that there was something missing about keeping them on the race track. Newman spoke about his car and how good it was running and mentioned running the race in the dark and the rain as a reason for the issues.
NASCAR said they will look into the comments and it wouldn't be new for Newman, who was once fined for the racing at the same track at Talladega in 2010, saying that the race then was just for the fans a marketing ploy and that the focus wasn't on the race.
In the past, even this year, NASCAR has fined drivers, including Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski previously and Denny Hamlin $25,000 for his comments about the new Gen-6 cars that are being used.
"I am doing this interview to let everybody know I'm all right," Newman told reporters after being released at the infield medical center. "They can build safer race cars, they can build safer walls. But they can't get their heads out of their a---- far enough to keep them on the race track, and that's pretty disappointing."
