Manchester United Transfer News: Ferguson Ready to Spend Big in the Summer; Nani Will Not Be Sold

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he is ready to spend big in the summer transfer window as the Scot looks to continue his dominance in the English Premier League.

United ran away with the Premier League title this season, with the crucial signing of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal making all the difference.

Ferguson, who has not shied away from making a few big-money signings in the past, admitted he might look for another marquee player if one became available, despite complaining a few times in the past about a lack of quality players.

"Well, I think the value I was talking about then was maybe some young, developing players were overvalued and there wasn't the right quality," he explained.

"But maybe there's a wind change in the fact that we may go for a top player. That's possible.

"We've got a nucleus of young players but we may spend something, you know."

United fans and pundits have been crying out for Ferguson to sign a midfielder for quite a few seasons now, but the manager again insisted he would not be necessarily looking for a player in that position.

"Not necessarily midfield," he said. "I think with top players it doesn't matter what position they play in. I think if I get a top player in, it adds to the team and it improves it."

Ferguson pointed out at the Van Persie signing as an example, with the Dutchman making a huge difference to United regaining the title, despite Ferguson already having the likes of Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the lineup.

"Last season, we had Chicharito, Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney but still went for Van Persie," Ferguson added.

"I don't think there's anything wrong with that. We won the league because we had a strong squad in terms of numbers and I think we should add to it."

Ferguson also insisted he would not be selling any players in the summer, with Nani in particular heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford in the summer.

"There is no need for us to sell anyone," Ferguson said. "We have no plans to do that. That's a fact.

"Nani played last week at Arsenal and I thought he did well.

"He is one of our squad players. When he is in form there are very few better than him. So I think we will bring him back in preseason training and he will be all right."

Ferguson, though, did admit contract talks with the player were still at a standstill. "That is not my department," he said. "It is something David (Gill) and Jorge Mendes (Nani's agent) are working on.

"That is ongoing. But there is no progress as far as I know."
