Minnesota Vikings Rumors: Can Chris Ponder Step His Game Up To An Elite Level? Jared Tells Him 'You Have To Be The Guy'

The Vikings hope QB Christian Ponder can help return the team to prominence before their new home is completed. The Vikings finished with a dismal 3-13 record in 2011, after conquering the NFC North with a 12-4 mark only two seasons prior."

The Minnesota Vikings are on the path of becoming one of the top teams in the league, should they continue to improve, but defensive end Jared Allen believes that if they're to become Super Bowl contenders, the leadership must come from quarterback Christian Ponder.

"I tell him all the time, you have to be the guy," Allen said of Ponder on Jim Rome's show. "Adrian can carry this team so far, our defense can carry this team so far. You know, you look at teams that historically win championships and they have consistent play from the quarterback position."

Last season the Allen and the rest of the Vikings didn't get much of a Super Bowl contending quarterback in Ponder; he fell to 21st overall in NFL quarterback rating, 23rd in passing touchdowns and 25th in passing yards.

However, despite his lack-luster performance last season, Allen continues to believe that Ponder can take a big step forward in the upcoming season.

"I hope he makes leaps and bounds," Allen said. "He's a great dude."

Well if Ponder can be both a "great dude" as well as a great quarterback, then there's no reason to not believe that the Vikings can become contenders given the pieces that they already have in place.
