Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert were considered the first couple of tennis when they were together years ago, but a revelation in a new book shows why their relationship ended.
According to the NY Daily News, Connors writes in a new memoir and "strongly hints" that the relationship between him and the 19-year-old star ended after she got pregnant and decided to have an abortion before the two were set to get married. Connors wrote that he "let nature take its course", but Evert, who wanted to continue her career, made a different decision on the matter. She called and told him the news.
"Well, thanks for letting me know," Connors claims he told Evert. "Since I don't have any say in the matter, then I guess I'm just here to help."
The relationship ended soon after and the couple that had endeared themselves to the sporting public was done. Connors was just 22-years-old and he said they should "take a step back and think about giving this a little more time."
The game of tennis was too much to work on for both and Connors later wed Playboy Playmate of the Year Patti McGuire.
