Arsenal have been alerted by the availability of Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain, after the Spanish club confirmed the Argentine would be sold in the summer transfer window.

Higuain has not had the best of times in front of goal this season, and was booed off the pitch by Real Madrid fans during the Champions League semifinal against Borussia Dortmund at the Camp Nou.

There have been widespread reports that Real will sell at least one of their two strikers - Higuain or Karim Benzema -- at the end of the season, and now it has been confirmed that it is the Argentine who will leave in the summer.

"In a great club like Real, we believe we need two number nines of a high level," Real Madrid director general Jose Angel Sanchez was quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.

"We have Benzema and Higuain. Higuain will leave, Benzema will stay and two others will come."

Arsenal are looking to bring in a striker in the summer, someone who can provide over 20 goals a season consistently.

While Higuain has his critics, with several of them suggesting the Real Madrid striker goes missing in the big games - the 25-year-old has scored just eight goals for Real Madrid in 48 Champions League games - Arsenal could definitely do with a player like him.

Higuain will cost the Gunners around the £20-25 million ($31-39 million) range, and will definitely be worth taking a shot at, with the likes of Edinson Cavani and Radamel Falcao well out of Arsenal's price-range.

Robert Lewandowski is an option, but the Polish international is seemingly on his way to Bayern Munich, while Manchester United also hold a keen interest.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with Stevan Jovetic of Fiorentina, another player whose talents cannot be questioned, but is far from prolific in front of goal.
