Tim Tebow Released: Twitter Erupts When News Broke Out That The Jets Cut Beloved Quarterback

Apr 29, 2013 12:40 PM EDT

One year after bringing Tim Tebow on board as a member of the New York Jets, and causing a laundry list of controversy, the franchise has decided on the long-anticipated move of the beloved quarterback and has released one of the NFL's most popular players on Monday.

"We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow," coach Rex Ryan said. "Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped.  Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward."

According to ESPN, Ryan and GM John Idzik informed Tebow early Monday morning in a face-to-face meeting before his expected team workout, all while he was dressed in his workout clothes, bringing an end to one of the strangest and oddest chapters in team and perhaps NFL history.

The move was presumed inevitable after the Jets' drafting of quarterback Geno Smith this past weekend, which left the franchise with six quarterbacks on their roster. Sources said that the Jets tried for months to trade Tebow but haven't found anyone interested in taking the unorthodox QB under their wing.

The Jets will have an open competition at quarterback, but without Tebow, who became expendable when the Jets signed David Garrard and drafted Smith.

Tebow, who led the Broncos to a playoff win only one year earlier, finished with modest numbers: eight pass attempts, six completions, 32 rushes for 102 yards and no touchdowns.

Here are some of the many Twitter reactions to the Jets dropping Tebow:
