The Atlanta Braves and the Colorado Rockies game was postponed on Monday. Maybe it's good for both teams as they are coming off of loses, but after all the snow that fell Monday afternoon and evening, is it time the Rockies organization considered getting a retractable roof? It might be too late, but here are a couple of reasons why the idea should be considered.
1. Bad Weather
This one is a no brainer. This is the main reason why a dome is necessary. This will be the second consecutive week where the Rockies have to play double-headers. Not that they seem to be upset, they swept the New York Mets last week.
Because, for some reason, MLB decides to schedule teams who barely play against each other early on when the weather is lousy, the Rockies are forced to have double-headers. It's not baseball weather when you can barely tell you're inside a stadium. There's no doubt about it, when you think Colorado the thoughts of snow, skiers, John Elway, Dumb & Dumber and the Rocky Mountains entire your mind, all of which remind us of the cold.
2. Thin Air
I am no scientist, but this is one popular fact about Coors Field, the air is thin, which in turn makes it a hitter's favorite place to break out of a slump. The ball flies out of Coors Field. Why not control the entire atmosphere by creating a dome? Again, not sure how the science (and math $) would work, but maybe instead of just placing the balls in a humidifier, the entire space inside can play under ideal baseball situations.
3. More People Will Show Up?
This usually pertains more to the team the organization places on the field, but rather than fans thinking, "Oh, no! It's too cold. I don't want to go to Coors Field," with a retractable roof, on days of bad weather, Coors Field could become more of a safe haven for fans. If there's bad weather approaching and the ball park is on their way home, heck, why not stop by and watch a game while things get better outside?
Of course, this is highly unlikely. Coors Field opened its doors in 1995, highly doubt they'll be adding any props to the stadium.
