The NHL playoffs are quickly approaching as the NHL lockout-shortened season are approaching and the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks have been the most impressive teams and are the top seeds in each conference as the postseason begins on April 30.

A number of teams are still fighting for playoff position as the schedule approaches and no matter what happens in the playoffs, the latest date for the final game is on June 28 for teams. Sidney Crosby may not be back for the Penguins in time for the start of the playoffs after undergoing surgery for getting his in the face with a puck.

The Maple Leafs are fighting for playoff position and may make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2004 and will have their first chance at a Cup since 1967. The team is currently in fifth place with a 24-13-5 record and 53 points, ahead of the Senators, Islanders and Rangers. New York was the top seed in the East last season but is fighting for eighth after an up and down start to the year.

The Islanders are back in contention after being one of the worst teams in the league, while the Jets, Sabres and Devils are chasing the Rangers for the last spot. The Bruins are in fourth place behind the Capitals, Canadiens and the Penguins, who have 64 points, second to the Blackhawks.

In the West, the Blackhawks have 70 points and are best in the league over the Ducks and Canucks, while the defending champion Kings are in fourth place. The Sharks are in fifth ahead of the Wild and Blues, while Detroit is hanging onto the final spot over Columbus and Dallas.

Stanley Cup Playoffs begin on Tuesday, Apr. 30.
