The New York Yankees host the Boston Red Sox in their 2013 Opening Day as teams around the league continue to kick off their new seasons. Long gone are the days where the Yankees and Red Sox were the best rivalry in baseball. Canada and Mexico are probably the rulers of that title now. Back in the early 2000's everybody watched the Yankees and Red Sox to see, not who was going to win, but who was going to get their butts whooped physically.
The rivalry peeked in 2003 when the brawl at Fenway Park found Yankees' bench coach, Don Zimmer rolling on the grassed after the Red Sox's ace, Pedro Martinez, took him down. It was an ugly and embarrassing scene for Zimmer who put himself in such a low position that afternoon in Boston. But the rivalry trickled all the way to the front office down to the fans in the stands.
Long are the days where Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz dominated the three and four holes to become the best hitting duo in baseball. Long are the days where the New York Yankees were healthy enough to put a decent competitive team on the field.
The Yankees begin the season with over $80 million on the disabled list as Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson and Derek Jeter will sit out the beginning of the year for the Bronx Bombers. Who knows what Rodriguez will bring to the table or how quickly Teixeira and Granderson can make a difference in the Yankees' offense, the obvious truth is that the Yankees have a chance to miss the playoffs if guys like Ichiro, Kevin Youkilis and Robinson Cano can't keep the offense moving in 2013.
Both teams have seasoned veterans in their rotation and youth seems to be the last team packed into the starting pitching. C.C. Sabathia takes the ball today for the Yankees while Jon Lester is on the hill for the Red Sox.
