La Liga Results: Lionel Messi Breaks Another Record as Barcelona and Real Madrid are Held to Draws

Mar 31, 2013 02:10 AM EDT

Lionel Messi continued his record-breaking run as Barcelona and Real Madrid were held to draws by teams battling for survival in La Liga.

Barca remained 13 points clear of their biggest rivals at the top of the table, with Messi setting up the first, before scoring the second in a 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo.

Messi, with the goal, became the first ever player to score against all 19 teams in the league consecutively - a staggering mark which will surely be only be broken by the great man himself in the near future.

"The run is the least important thing," Messi told reporters.

"I have been lucky to score and to help the team in games. I don't give the records any importance. The important thing today was to win.

"It is difficult for everyone after the break for internationals, and it is never easy to play teams who are fighting to stay in the division."

The game did not quite go according to plan though, with Celta taking the lead in the 38th minute, after Nacho Insa netted off a cross from on-loan Arsenal forward Park Chu-Young.

The lead did not last too long, as Messi, captaining the side for the first time in a league game, found Christian Tello with a nice chip over the top for the latter to slot home.

Jordi Roura had rested several first team players with the Champions League game against Paris Saint Germain in mind, but after throwing in Andres Iniesta and David Villa, Barca started to dominate and duly took the lead with a little under 20 minutes remaining.

Tello this time returned the favor to Messi, crossing for the Argentine to poke home into the bottom corner. The goal was Messi's 43rd in the league, and 30th in the 19-match scoring run.

"No one has ever done this in the history of the sport," Barca assistant coach Jordi Roura said. "This player is immense and those of us that are lucky enough to work with him need to enjoy it."

Borja Oubina, however, equalized in the 88th minute with a header to deny Barca yet another league win.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid failed to capitalize on Barca's slipup as a relatively second string side drew 1-1 at Real Zaragoza.

Rodri opened the scoring for Zaragoza in the sixth minute off a quick counter-attack, before Cristiano Ronaldo equalized just before halftime for his 28th goal of the league season.

Real tried their best to find the winner, with Jose Mourinho bringing on Angel Di Maria, Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil, but Zaragoza held on for the point.

"Our goal in La Liga is to try and win each match," Mourinho told reporters. "This result is not related to the (Champions League) match on Wednesday.

"It has not been our aim for some time to win the championship again in this season. We know that it is a question of finishing eleven, ten, nine or eight points behind, not winning.

"With the draw what we could lose is second place. If Atletico (Madrid) win they go further ahead and that is the most important aspect."

Results: Celta Vigo 2-2 Barcelona; Real Zaragoza 1-1 Real Madrid; Levante 1-0 Sevilla; Rayo Vallecano 1-3 Malaga.
