New York Jets Free Agency Rumors: Fred Davis Visits Team, Washington Redskins No Longer Option for Tight End?

If the New York Jets want quarterback Mark Sanchez to be successful, they have to surround him with the appropriate weapons that will give the team a chance to win some games. The Jets recently lost Dustin Keller to free agency, leaving the team with a hole to fill on the roster. Keller was extremely productive at the position so replacing him with someone of equal value is important. The Jets are now setting their sights on unrestricted free agent Fred Davis from the Washington Redskins.

Davis is coming off an Achilles injury which makes the signing of him very risky for any team. He only played seven games last season, recording only 24 catches for 325 yards and zero touchdowns. His best season came in 2011 when he caught 59 passes for 796 touchdowns and three scores. He has spent his entire career with the Redskins and with only five seasons in the league, he still has plenty of playing days ahead.

Davis is a gaining a lot of interest from team while the free agent market for the position is not strong. He has taken visits to the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns. Davis has expressed his interest in playing for the Redskins again and while the team has met with him about a possible deal, nothing has been formally offered.

This opens the door for the Jets who are searching for a tight end. With Keller out, Davis could move right in as the starter. Davis is set to visit the team in the next few days. He says his rehab is going ahead of schedule, so if the Jets feel like they will get a fully healthy Davis next season, they might be the team that gets to land him. With Jared Cook, Tony Gonzalez and Brandon Myers all off the market, Davis becomes the next available.

Davis has stressed that he is anxious to sign with a team so he can prove the doubters wrong.  He has started running again and going through a few playing drills. He believes he can come back and be productive for any team.

"A lot of people are looking at the injury and that stuff. I definitely feel like whatever team signed any tight ends right now, I'm gonna make them regret anything that they do- AND the Redskins, too, as well- because I know I'm gonna go out here and I'm gonna do what I have to do. And I'll bet you next year's gonna be a good year for me. This is The One right here," Davis said.
