Former Oklahoma star quarterback Steve Davis died on Sunday in a plane crash that occurred late in the afternoon near the South Bend Regional Airport in Indiana, according to the Associated Press.
According to Yahoo Sports, the plane had four passengers on it and was able to touch down on the runway at the airport before heading back up into the air and crashing into a neighborhood. The report said that the pilot previously said that there was a problem with the electrical power while approaching the airport.
Along with Davis, passenger Wesley Caves was killed in the crash, while the other two were brought to the hospital with serious injuries. A woman in one of the houses the plane crashed into was also brought in for medical attention. The plane was registered to Caves's Montana-registered company that makes window film and paint overlays.
James Steven Davis is his full name and Davis played for the Sooners for four years and won the 1976 Orange Bowl MVP. Davis was very successful as a starter, winning two national titled and going 32-1-1. He was 61 years old.
Former Oklahoma head coach Barry Switzer wrote about his passing on Twitter, writing : "I'm saddened by the loss of Steve Davis. Great role model for young people on & off the field. He was my 1st QB & had an outstanding career."
Davis has stayed in contact with Oklahoma and previously worked out with star quarterback Landry Jones, who he helped mentor with advice last season.
