Matt Forte is one of the best running backs in football and he has taken a stance on a possible rule change in the NFL, calling it "absurd" that players could be penalized for lowering their heads while carrying the ball.

According to ESPN.com, the proposed rule change would allow referees to penalize ball carriers, including running backs, who lower their heads to deliver a blow. Forte took to Twitter to write about his thoughts on the rule change, saying that he felt it was "absurd".

The rule would bring a 15-yard penalty if the runner uses the crown of his helmet for contact. According to ESPN.com, "Incidental contact with the crown of the helmet would not be a penalty."

"The proposed rule change for running backs might be the most absurd suggestion of a rule change I've ever heard of," Forte wrote. "In order to lower ur shoulder u obviously have to lower ur head. It's a way of protecting ur self from a tackler and a way to break tackles."

Forte said that running backs do the move instinctively and it would be hard to adjust right away.

"U can't change the instinctive nature of running the football," Forte added.

The NFL has been trying to implement new rules to help with safety and concussions, which is the exact reason NFL competition committee chairman Rich McKay brought up the possible rule change in an interview with the AP.

"This is pure and simple a player safety rule," McKay said. "The time has come we need to address the situation. You can't duck your head and deliver a forcible blow with your helmet."

Forte went to the Pro Bowl in 2011 and has dealt with injuries throughout his career. He can catch the ball and run with it and he has amassed over 5,000 rushing yards in 75 games, ranking fourth in team history.
