Real Madrid and Barcelona are not interested in signing Wayne Rooney, with the Spanish giants worried about how the Manchester United striker would fit into the club's systems.

Rooney has been continually linked with a move away from Old Trafford after being left out of the starting lineup in the Champions League last 16 second leg against Real Madrid.

While Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted he wants Rooney to remain with United, there has been a feeling that the England international could leave at the end of the season.

Paris Saint Germain, owing to their endless pot of money, have been linked with a move, while another French club with plenty of cash available - Monaco - are also reportedly interested.

German giants Bayern Munich are keeping tabs on the situation as well, with Pep Guardiola a big fan of the 27-year-old.

It has been reported that Rooney would prefer a move to Spain, with Barcelona and Real Madrid his preferred options, but that might not materialize, with the two Spanish clubs reportedly not interested in signing the striker.

"Real Madrid and Barcelona do not think Rooney is on the market and expect him to stay at Old Trafford longer than Sir Alex Ferguson," Spanish journalist Guillem Balague told Sky Sports.

"But they are also not interested in him because they don't think he fits what they are looking for. The perception is that he is very much an English player that fits a certain mould.

"The impression from Real and Barca is that if there is a bigger player in the team he can disappear, and that in big games he doesn't always do the job that is required of him."

Rooney has been overshadowed by Robin Van Persie, ever since the Dutchman's arrival from Arsenal last summer, but the Englishman has adapted fairly well to a deeper role, with his assist count increasing considerably this season.

Real Madrid are expected to sell one of Karim Benzema or Gonzalo Higuain in the summer, but they have made Radamel Falcao their No. 1 target.

Barca might be in need of a forward, if David Villa were to leave at the end of the season, and it will be interesting to see which player they target.
