NFL Free Agency Rumors: Detriot Lions Pursue Reggie Bush, Team in Lead to Get Ex-Miami Dolphin Running Back

Mar 13, 2013 09:16 AM EDT

Reggie Bush wants to be the premier running back for a team, however his versatility and sometimes inconsistency has led him to be more of a part-time weapon. Bush is now a free agent and will not re-sign with the Miami Dolphins. The team that lands him will be the one to offer him a starting role. The Detroit Lions are in need of a big time running back and have taken the lead in the race to sign Bush.

Bush has been taking trips to teams showing interest in his services. Detroit, Arizona and Cincinnati are all contenders. Bush played the role of a utility player during his time in New Orleans. He was primarily a third-down back while also being used in passing situations. He proved his ability to be an every-down player during in Miami where he had two of his best rushing years of his career. Bush rushed for 1,086 yards in 2011 and 986 yards last season. He also caught 78 passes, showing his dual-threat abilities.

The Detroit Lions want Bush to step in and be the final piece of their offensive puzzle. The team thought they were getting a Bush-like back when they drafted Jahvid Best; however concussion issues have likely ended his career. The Lions have promised Bush he would be their starting running back, active on every play. Placing Bush in the backfield with Calvin Johnson and Brandon Pettigrew as the receiver and Detroit has a revamped deadly offense.

The other teams interested have too many questions regarding other aspects of the offense. While Arizona has Larry Fitzgerald, they have uncertainty in the quarterback. Cincinnati would only use Bush as a part-time back catching passes for short yardage. While offensive coordinator Jay Gruden could get creative with how he uses Bush, they would not use him on every play.

Detroit offers the total package team that Bush is looking for in the upcoming season. With big time receivers like Mike Wallace getting taken off the market, it only makes the value and price of Bush go up. The Lions got rid of a few large contracts and could afford to pay Bush the money he asks for.
