The New York Yankees are one of the oldest teams in baseball and are dealing with a number of injuries, which is one reason why ESPN commentator Doug Glanville compared them to the film "Brokeback Mountain," implying that their backs are literally broken.
According to Yahoo, Glanville used the comments while calling the Yankees-Cardinals spring training game and along with play-by-play announcer Jon Sciambi, spoke about how old the team is. The Yankees are dealing with injuries to Alex Rodriguez as well as GM Brian Cashman, while Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera are coming back from serious injuries.
Glanville said: "They have basically Brokeback Mountain going over here. I mean everybody's on the disabled list or hurt in some form or fashion."
The 2005 Oscar-winning film about two cowboys played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal is called by many "the gay cowboy movie", but Glanville was likely referring to the "broke" part, as the Yankees have injuries, money issues and are not the faorites to win the AL East.
The analogy is off, but his point is likely right, as the Yankees will have a lot to overcome this season.
