Cuba vs. Netherlands Result: Upset in Second Round of Playoffs as Cubans Drop First Game

Mar 08, 2013 03:01 PM EST

The Cubans are probably still shocked. They didn't just lose, they couldn't play defense efficiently nor could they get the big hit to drive in runs. The Kingdom of the Netherlands showed up and surprised many by taking Game 1 of the second round at the World Baseball Classic.

Diegomar Markwell continued to dominate on the mound as second baseman Jonathan Schoop raked away with Cuban pitching.

The Netherland's starter, Markwell has been a force winning both of his first starts at the WBC. This time, he went six innings, though giving up nine hits, he only allowed one earned run while walking one batter.

For Schoop, well, he's impressing the world. Already wearing orange and black, the Baltimore Orioles must love what they're seeing out of this kid. He went 3-6 with a home run and four RBI in the game singlehandedly crushing the Cuban ballclub.

What Does this Loss Mean for Cuba?
For Cuba it basically means they have to win every game. They are up against the wall having lost to the Netherlands and now they will face Chinese Taipei after they loss to Japan on Friday.

This could be another disappointing WBC campaign for Cuba as they are No. 1 in the world rankings. Though a tough tast, Cuba possesses the pitching and hitting to continue advancing in the playoffs.

Next up for the Netherlands, they face Japan in the battle of the second-round undefeateds.
