Tiger Woods got off to a hot start while Rory McIlroy is still struggling as Friday action goes on at Doral for the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
Donald Trump is planning to blow up the course after the tournament, while Tiger Woods is trying his best to get things done for the second time on the tour this year. Trump, who has embarrassed himself by going after President Obama's birth certificate and college records, said that after signing a contract last year to purchase the Doral Golf Resort, he has plans to renovate it completely. He said that after the WGC-Cadillac Championship is played on the Blue Monster course, he will demolish it for a renovation.
''We started as a renovation,'' Trump said of the course originally designed by Dick Wilson. ''And as we got more and more into it, Gil and I started to say, 'Wow, we are really making it a much bigger and I think much more magnificent course. ... We are really doing massive changes.''
Tiger Woods is showing some of his old form once again, as he is in the lead at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral after shooting a 6-under 66 to take the top spot on the leaderboard.
Woods did excellent work with his putter, making birdies in the 11th and 12th holes before shooting bogeys at the 13th and 14th. But he rebounded later with birdies on three of the final six holes and was able to stay ahead of the rest of the pack. McIlroy was behind and continued to struggle after missing the cut at Abu Dhabi and getting eliminated in Match Play.
There is no cut at this event, so he will be around for the weekend, but he would like to be playing better ahead of the Masters in April. He walked off the Honda Classic after dealing with tooth pain and now has shot over 70 more times at the start of this year than he did last season.
"I wasn't putting as much pressure on myself, and that's why I didn't get as frustrated," McIlroy said of his round Thursday. "If I had played like that last week, I would have been not so happy, but I understand it's a work in progress and I'm working at it and it will come together pretty soon."
Following his walking off the course and quitting at the Honda Classic last week, Rory McIlroy denied on Wednesday that it had anything to do with a breakup with his girlfriend, tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.
"I've read what's been written, and just because I have a bad day on the golf course and Caroline loses a match in Malaysia it doesn't mean that we're breaking up,'' McIlroy said. "It's sport. Look, I'd rather keep my private life as private as possible, but everything on that front is great and I'm looking forward to seeing her next week when she gets to Miami.''
McIlroy later spoke to reporters and said that he regretted leaving the course. He missed the cut at Abu Dhabi and also was eliminated in the first round of match play before the Honda Classic incident.
"Obviously had a lot of time to think about it," McIlroy said. "I realized pretty quickly that it wasn't the right thing to do. No matter how bad I was playing, I should have stayed out there."
