Arsenal vs Bayern Munich Player Ratings: Lahm, Muller and Kroos the Classy Trio for Bayern as Wilshere Wages Lone War for the Gunners

Well, Arsenal were handed a footballing lesson by Bayern Munich, who showed there are head and shoulders above their opponents with a comfortable 3-1 victory, without even really hitting top gear in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League.

Here is a look at how the players fared in the tie at the Emirates.

Arsenal: Wojciech Szczesny: Didn't have too much to do apart from picking the ball out of the net three times. Should have done better with the second goal conceded, and did nothing to prove that he is Arsenal's long-term solution. Rating: 5/10

Bacary Sagna: Held onto the ball a little too much in the attacking third, but kept Franck Ribery relatively quiet. However, the Frenchman's skills going forward are seemingly waning with every game. Rating: 6/10

Per Mertesacker: Was not authoritative enough and gave away the ball a couple of times in really dangerous areas which could have cost Arsenal dear. Clearly did not relish playing against the club from his country. Rating: 5/10

Laurent Koscielny: Did not do too many things wrong, but that assuredness that makes the rest of the defense listen is just not there among any of the Arsenal backline. Was probably Arsenal's best defender in game, although that really is not saying much. Rating: 6/10

Thomas Vermaelen: Did not really look comfortable at left-back, and was left isolated a couple of times with Lahm overlapping. Looks a shadow of the player that burst onto the English Premier League when he signed for Arsenal. Rating: 6/10

Mikel Arteta: Kept things ticking over and the ball constantly moving. Was one of the visible leaders on the pitch. Rating: 7/10

Jack Wilshere: Arsenal's best player and the only truly quality player on par with the names at Bayern. There is only so much one man can do, but even then did not make enough of those bursting runs down the middle. Rating: 7/10

Aaron Ramsey: Had a sound first half and showed plenty of commitment for the cause. Slowly but surely Ramsey looks like finding his old form again, which is at least some positive to take away. Rating: 6/10

Santi Cazorla: Was one of the disappointments for Arsenal really, although his cause was not helped by having to play on the left for much of the game. Gave away the ball too often and surprisingly did not make the right decisions in the final third. Rating: 5/10

Lukas Podolski: Was invisible in the first half, but scored Arsenal's only goal to give them the slimmest of slim hopes. Still should have really stood up and imposed himself on the game a lot more. Rating: 5/10

Theo Walcott: Totally lost up front. Had a couple of chances to run at the Bayern defense and use his pace, but chose to pass instead. Just could not get any real chances, with little or no service. Rating: 5/10

Substitutes: Olivier Giroud: Almost scored with his first touch, but almost is not good enough for Arsenal. Made a nuisance of himself in the final 20 minutes without really threatening too much. Rating: 6/10

Tomas Rosicky: Played a couple of nice balls and made a couple of decent runs. Could have been more effective given time. Rating: 6/10

Bayern Munich: Manuel Neuer: At fault for the goal, coming out and not getting to the ball. Made a couple of easy enough saves, but apart from that was a mere spectator, with Arsenal having plenty of possession, but rarely threatening the goal. Rating: 6/10

Philipp Lahm: Created the third goal - which knocked the stuffing out of Arsenal, and almost assisted in a goal just before halftime. Was sound in defense, and brilliantly effective going forward. Rating: 8/10

Dante: Was a rock in the defense, and cut out most of Arsenal's attempted through balls, while stopping Wilshere a couple of times as well. Rating: 8/10

Daniel Van Buyten: Was also impressive, but Arsenal did not do enough to put pressure on the two central defenders. Rating: 7/10

David Alaba: Left-back who can attack as well as defend, a manager's dream really. Did all the right things and hardly put a foot wrong for someone so young. No wonder Bayern are so mean in defense this season, even Barcelona will find it difficult to find a way through. Rating: 8/10

Javi Martinez: Was sound and did his job perfectly, even threatening with a couple of forward runs. Came close with a header off a corner. Rating: 7/10

Bastian Schweinsteiger: Had class written all over him, even if he did nothing spectacular in the game. Dictated the Bayern offense whenever they had the ball. There was one negative though, with the midfielder set to miss the second leg after picking up a yellow card, although, with the tie pretty much sealed, that might just be a blessing in disguise. Rating: 7/10

Toni Kroos: Struck the opening goal which set the tone for the rest of the game for Bayern going forward. His playmaking skills just keep getting better and better. Rating: 8/10

Franck Ribery: Had a quiet game and was pretty much in the periphery, with most of Bayern's attacks coming from the right. Rating: 5/10

Thomas Muller: Showed why he is one of the most underrated players in Europe at the moment. Is having a brilliant season, and added yet another goal to his tally. Rating: 8/10

Mario Mandzukic: Scored the third goal, but apart from that did not really do much. But that is all you need from strikers -- goals. Rating: 6/10

Substitutes: Arjen Robben: Made the third goal by playing in Lahm down the right, and looked dangerous on the counter-attack as Arsenal poured forward. Rating: 7/10

Luis Gustavo: Brought in to replace Toni Kroos and add a bit of bite in midfield. Did not have enough of an impact on the game to warrant a rating.

Mario Gomez: Came on in the final ten minutes for Mandzukic and had a half chance to make it 4-1.
