AC Milan are looking to trump Manchester United for Ajax starlet Viktor Fischer, as the battle for one of the most highly thought of players looks like going down to the wire, with several other top clubs in Europe also interested.

United have also been heavily linked with another young midfielder in Christian Eriksen, but Ferguson has kept a close eye on Fisher's progress, according to the Daily Express.

The young forward is seen as the next big thing to come from Ajax, with the 18-year-old already a full Danish international.

Milan, however, have become the frontrunners for the youngster's signature, as the Italian side see the player as a perfect addition to form a lethal front three with Mario Balotelli and Stephan El Shaarawy.

Along with the two clubs, the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool have also been credited with an interest in the past, so it will be interesting to see whether Ajax will be able to hold onto their prime asset in the summer or whether they will be tempted to sell.

Meanwhile, Wesley Sneijder has revealed the details of his torment at Inter Milan while saying he wanted to seal a move to Manchester United, but was prevented by the Italian club from doing so.

United made a bid for the Dutch midfielder last summer, according to the player, which was rejected by Inter, before the Italian club froze Sneijder out for much of last year due to a financial disagreement.

"Manchester United had offered €20 million (£17 million, $26 million) for me and the club rejected it," he told Fanatik.

"I wanted to go to United but Inter didn't let me. And then, they asked me to lower my wage. I didn't accept it.

"Massimo Moratti said to me, 'I give you €7 million per year (£6 million, $9 million) per year, you should sign a five-year contract.'

"I didn't sign it. I learned afterwards though it had a €50 million (£43 million, $67 million) release clause (inserted in the new contract).

"That's why they put me on the stands for three months. I've experienced problems with the presidents both at Real Madrid and Inter."

Sneijder eventually made a move to Galatasaray for a much lower fee, with United deciding against making a bid for the Dutchman having already seen their attacking line strengthened considerably in the summer.
