Now that the first leg of the Champions League has been signed, sealed and delivered with the tie set to be decided at Old Trafford let's take a look at the player ratings of both Real Madrid and Manchester United players.
Real Madrid: Diego Lopez: Looked a little nervy at times, but stood up and made a couple of crucial saves when needed, particularly a couple from Robin Van Persie. Lopez ensured Iker Casillas was not missed too much, and the goalkeeper will expect to be a lot busier in the second leg. Rating: 7/10
Alvaro Arbeloa: Did not offer too much going forward, apart from a couple of crosses. Was solid enough at the back, but could have really made more of an impact on the attacking front, even if it might not be his best aspect. Rating: 6/10
Sergio Ramos: Made a couple of crucial tackles, which might have otherwise sent a United player clear on goal. Was pretty solid for the most part, but did not threaten with a goal in setpieces as would have expected, and was to blame for the United goal, having let Danny Welbeck go. Rating: 5/10
Raphael Varane: The French youngster showed his ability to remain calm in big-match situations in the El Clasico Copa Del Rey first leg. And this time as well, the 19-year-old was not overly daunted by the United attack, apart from one blemish against Patrice Evra, where he could have gotten sent off had the referee given a foul. Rating: 7/10
Fabio Coentrao: Should have had a goal in the first half, but for the brilliance of David De Gea. Forced another good save in the second half as well; was generally good going forward and acted as a good foil for his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo. Rating: 8/10
Xabi Alonso: Was picking out passes at will in the first half and kept the Real attacks ticking. Was a little shackled by Welbeck in the second, but it was still an assured performance by the midfielder. Rating: 7/10
Sami Khedira: A lot of willing running, but never really got anywhere with it. Played in one brilliant cross, which was nearly turned in by Coentrao, but could have done a little more to add to Real's attacking flow, particularly in the second period, when the pace of the game slowed down considerably. Rating: 6/10
Angel Di Maria: Was in inspired form, and but for a couple of saves from De Gea, and a couple more shots which whistled wide, would have had at least a brace to his name. Di Maria, who setup Ronaldo for Real's goal, will be crucial to Real's fortunes in the second leg. Rating: 8/10
Mesut Ozil: Ran the show in the first, but could not quite get a foothold in the second. Apart from Ronaldo, Ozil looked a class above and might just be the different maker at Old Trafford: Rating: 7/10
Cristiano Ronaldo: Scored the goal, a majestic header; but was starved for service in the second period. A 40-yarder nearly went in as well, and that goal would have been one for the ages had it rippled the back of the net, instead of the top. Old Trafford and his adoring United fans now await. Rating: 7/10
Karim Benzema: Was a little disappointing. Perhaps, the most ineffective of Real's attacking quartet, and was subbed by Jose Mourinho for Gonzalo Higuain early in the second half. Rating: 4/10
Substitutes: Gonzalo Higuain: Did a lot of willing running after coming on, and created a couple of half chances which did not really trouble the United goalkeeper. Was better than Benzema on the day. Rating: 6/10
Luka Modric: Tried to find the pass that would unlock the defense, but was just not successful. Might have a role to play in the second leg, particularly if the tie goes into extra time. Rating: 5/10
Pepe: Came on late for Alonso.
Manchester United: David De Gea: United's outstanding player on the night. Made a string of fabulous saves, particularly the one off Coentrao, which does seem to get better and better every time you watch it. Rating: 9/10
Rafael: Was harried and troubled by Ronaldo, Di Maria and Coentrao. Eceived a yellow card in the first half, but kept his tackling in check to avoid a disastrous sending off: Rating: 5/10
Rio Ferdinand: Was assured and untroubled for large parts and looked every bit the class act that he is. Rating: 8/10
Jonny Evans: Was preferred to Nemanja Vidic, and did not let Sir Alex Ferguson down, with a solid performance in the cauldron that is the Bernabeu. Ferguson will have a tough decision to decide on who to play in the second leg. Rating: 7/10
Patrice Evra: Was not his marauding best going forward, and was left exposed a couple of times on one-on-ones. It is difficult to imagine how the game would have turned out had the referee given a red to Varane for the challenge on Evra. Rating: 6/10
Phil Jones: Was given the man-marking job and did it remarkably well for a youngster, tracking both Ronaldo and Ozil and nullifying their threat to a large extent, particularly in the second period. Made a crucial challenge in the closing stages to take the ball of Ronaldo's boot. Rating: 9/10
Michael Carrick: Was not given the time to make his astute passes and keep the ball moving forward. Had a lot of defending to do, which he did well. Rating: 6/10
Wayne Rooney: Shifted to the right, could not show his attacking prowess, while his passing boots went missing a few time. Did make the chance for Van Persie though, which could have given United a 2-1 lead. Rating: 6/10
Danny Welbeck: Scored the all-important away goal and was a menace to Real's defense. Also did his defensive duties pretty well. Welbeck will be crucial to United in the home leg. Rating: 8/10
Shinji Kagawa: Was disappointing. Never got into the game and was shifted to the left in the second period, before being taken off for Ryan Giggs. Rating: 4/10
Robin Van Persie: Threatened to break away a couple of time in the first half to no avail. Was defending more than he would have liked, but missed a sitter by his standards in the second half. Rating: 6/10
Substitutes: Ryan Giggs: Came on and did his job well, while squeezing the space in United's midfield. Had a glimpse of a chance, but failed to take a first-time shot, allowing Varane to clear. Rating: 6/10
Antonio Valencia: Came on for the cramping Welbeck, but could not have much of an impact going forward. Rating: 4/10
Anderson: Was a late substitute for Rooney.
