Michael Vick is guaranteed to be back next season as the Philadelphia Eagles and the quarterback worked out a deal. However, what the deal doesn't guarantee is that Vick will be starting for the Eagles as Nick Foles will also be competing for the job.
Foles was a promising fill-in for Vick after Week 10. His record in six starts aren't impressive (1-5), but when you look at the sacks total it's understandable.
In six starts in his rookie year, Foles totaled 161 complete passes for 1,699 yards, six touchdowns and he threw five interceptions. His biggest game came against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he threw for 381 yards and two touchdowns, while adding a rushing TD as well. He was also sacked a career high six times in that game.
Analysts don't believe Foles will fit coach Chip Kelly's offensive scheme, but one thing that Foles will provide Vick is motivation. Vick needs to win the starting job in order to remain in the league after the season.
The math is simple for Vick, since his fate isn't certain beyond 2013, Vick will have to play well in order to convince other teams that he can still play at a high level in the NFL.
Vick had a long term deal with the Eagles, but following another injured plagued season, the team decided it would be better if the restructured the deal. Signing Vick to a big deal was risky, but now the Eagles won't have to suffer. Vick is getting a paycut which will reduce his salary allow the quarterback to earn up to $10 million. Vick was supposed to make $15.5 million in 2013.
If they feel he can help them win, then maybe they will give him another year, but Vick will have to earn it.
The Eagles are coming off another disappointing season where they finished 4-12 and in last place in the NFC East. With the Washington Redskins and New York Giants heading the division, the Eagles will have to do something to keep up with these two dynamic forces.
Vick has 1- seasons in the NFL. He's thrown for over 20,000 yards in his career with 123 touchdowns passing and 34 touchdowns rushing.
